Battle Rock Stronghold Songbook

A Grazing Mace

From the Calontir Songbook; tune of "Amazing Grace".
{C}by Jenna of Southwind

A grazing mace, how sweet the blow
That killed a wretch like me.
I once was up but now I'm down.
A grazing mace killed me.
My knight has promised help for me
He'll save my ass for sure.
He will my shield wall anchor be
As long as life endure.
That mace has slain ten thousand foes
All sweating in the sun.
I'd no more grace to duck that mace
I was ten thousand one.
A grazing mace, how sweet the blow
That killed a wretch like me.
I once was up but now I'm down.
A grazing mace killed me.

The Elfin Knicht

Tune of "Scarborough Fair" - this is, in fact, an adaptation of an early version of the same song, c. 1600.

{C}| valign="top" style="width:50%;" | {C}The wynd hath blawn my plaid away,
{C}Oure the hills and far away,
{C}And far away to Norroway,
{C}My plaid schal not be blawn away.
The Elfin knicht sits on yon hill,
{C}Ba, ba, ba, lillie ba
{C}He blaws his horn baith loud and shrill,
{C}The wynd hath blawn my plaid away.
He blaws it east, he blaws it west,
{C}' wish that horn were in my kist
He blaws it where he liketh best
He blaws and blaws my plaid away.
I have a sister, younger than me,
Yesterday, married was she
And if that knicht would marry me
The wynd would blaw my plaid not away.
No sooner these words my heart hath said,
Bring that horn and blaw it for me,
That Elfin knicht came up to my bed
The wynd hath blawn my plaid away
Ye must make me a Cambric sark
This curtisie the knicht asked of me,
Without any seam or needlewark,
if thou wouldst be married to me
If this courtisie I do, knicht, for thee,
Thou must do another to me:
I have an aiker of good ley lands,
Which lyeth low betwixt the sea strands.
Maun ye plough't wi your touting horn,
{C}And ye saw't wi one pepper corn.
And ye maun harrow 't wi a thorn,
{C}And haue your wark done ere the morn.
Thou must bring it oure the sea,
{C}Fair and clean and dry to me.
{C}And when ye haue done finished your wark,
{C}Then to me come, and ye'll get your sark.
'I'll not quit my plaid for my life,'
{C}Quoth the Elfin knicht then to me,
{C}'It haps my seven bairns and my wyf
The wynd schal not blaw my plaid away.'
'I schal keep my maidenhead still,
I schal keep my lands by the sea.
The Elfin knicht may do what he will,
The wynd schal not blaw my plaid away.'
{C}The wind has blown my plaid away,
{C}Over the hills and far away,
{C}And far away to Norway,
{C}My plaid shall not be blown away.

The Elfin knight sits on yon hill,
{C}Ba, ba, ba, lillie ba
{C}He blows his horn both loud and shrill,
{C}The wind has blown my plaid away.

He blows it east, he blows it west,
{C}I wish that horn were in my chest
{C}He blows it where he likes it best
{C}He blows and blows my plaid away.

I have a sister, younger than me,
{C}Yesterday, married was she
{C}And if that knight would marry me
{C}The wind would blow my plaid not away.

No sooner these words my heart had said,
{C}Bring that horn and blow it for me,
{C}That Elfin knight came up to my bed
{C}The wind has blown my plaid away

You must make me a Cambric shirt
{C}This courtesy the knight asked of me,
{C}Without any seam or needlework,
{C}if you would be married to me

If this courtesy I do, knight, for thee,
{C}Thou must do another to me:
{C}I have an acre of goodly lands,
{C}Which lie down low between the sea strands [beaches].

You must plow it your touting horn,
{C}And sew it with one pepper corn.
{C}And you must harvest it with a thorn,
{C}And have your work done ere the morn.

You must bring it over the sea,
{C}Fair and clean and dry to me.
{C}And when you've done finished your work,
Then to me come, and you'll get your shirt.

'I'll not quit my plaid for my life,'
Said the Elfin knight then to me,
'It risks my seven kids and my wife
{C}The wind shall not blow my plaid away.'

'I shall keep my maidenhead still,
{C}I shall keep my lands by the sea.
{C}The Elfin knight may do what he will,
{C}The wind shall not blow my plaid away.'

The Golden Hall of Battle Rock

by Wilhelm Meis

Since ancient times
{C}our princely lines
{C}have conquered western shores
{C}and proudly hailed
{C}that phoenix sail
{C}vert azure gules and or

We'll slay the foes
and take the field now
we'll lay them down one by one
{C}their shattered bones
{C}and tattered flags
{C}beneath the phoenix sun

We'll split their shields
and crush their armour
the Battle Rock shakes beneath
as one by one
they each succumb
to our spearmen's reach

Since days of yore
{C}the ancient lore
{C}has sung our victory song
{C}since Egil's scorn
had Bloodaxe borne
these shores we have held strong

We are outnumbered
ten to one here
though we pride ourselves the odds
we will take them
one by one
send them over to the gods

We will ever
fight for honour
hew our foes down one and all
until the time
when we shall dine
in Asgaard's golden hall

We are the sons
{C}of ancient northmen
{C}following the flaming hawk
{C}proud we stand
{C}and proud we'll die here
on the shores of Battle Rock!

Proposals

Free Will Sacrifice

by Amon Amarth, from the 2008 album Twilight of the Thunder God

See them gathered on the plains now
See an army strong and vast
As long as one of us remains here
None of them will ever pass
Here they come so raise the shields high
Like wolves they show their teeth
None of us will ever yield now
To the scavengers beneath
We're outnumbered ten to one here
Still, I love the odds
We will sacrifice them one by one
Send them off to the gods
Soon we will be gone
A free will sacrifice
As free men we are born
And free we shall die
Here they come ten thousand strong
Charging up the hill
This day will be both hard and long
They move in for the kill
Hold the line don't let it break
Use your sword and spear
A glory death, for all awaits
All who knows no fear
Hordes of men they hit the shields
Like waves they break away
We face our woven destiny
And we don't fear the grave
Soon we will be gone
A free will sacrifice
As free men we are born
And free we shall die

Bloodshed

by Amon Amarth, from the 2002 album Versus the World

First two verses omitted

Two men meet on battleground
Their eyes are full of hate
By sacred oaths both are bound
Death will be their fate

They share the blood of once proud men
Yet foes they have become
One fights for truth, the other for faith
Perish has begun

Here comes the - BLOODSHED!
It's the age of - BLOODSHED!
Here comes the - BLOODSHED!
It's the age of - BLOODSHED!

Two brothers meet in battle heat
Both will die to day
No victory and no defeat
Death is their only way

In their eyes is no remorse
They make their final charge
Thrusting their swords with mortal force
Piercing each other's hearts

Here comes the - BLOODSHED!
It's the age of - BLOODSHED!
Here comes the - BLOODSHED!
Prepare for - BLOODSHED!

Discussion

I put up a new suggestion, "Free Will Sacrifice" by Amon Amarth. This was a lot of my inspiration to write "The Golden Hall of Battle Rock", and then I realized that this song could just be sung straight and be a good song around the camp fire (if everyone has a copy of the words). I just thought I'd see what you guys think, if this is something anyone has an interest in. Thanks, and feel free to leave comments one way or another.
